The goal of poker
In Texas Hold’em you make the best five-card hand from two private cards and five community cards, or you win by betting in a way that makes everyone else fold. You do not need the best hand to win a pot, you only need everyone else to give up.

The betting rounds
A hand of Hold’em has four betting rounds:
- Preflop: everyone gets two cards and acts after the blinds are posted.
- Flop: three community cards are dealt, followed by betting.
- Turn: a fourth community card, then betting.
- River: the fifth card, a final round of betting, then showdown.
On your turn you can check, bet, call, raise, or fold depending on the action in front of you.
Position and the blinds
The dealer button marks who acts last after the flop, which is a big advantage. The two players to its left post the small and big blinds, forced bets that create action. Acting later means more information, so you can play more hands in late position and fewer up front.
Your first strategy
Beginners lose by playing too many hands too passively. Do the opposite:
- Play tight: fold weak hands, especially from early position.
- Play aggressive: when you do enter a pot, bet and raise rather than call.
- Respect big bets: if a tight player suddenly raises the river, believe them.
